Business College Taster Day at South Essex College, Thurrock Campus

Our year 11 GCSE Business Class spent the day at South Essex College to experience what it would be like going on to study Business at College. They were given a tour of the campus and took part in a series of workshops which focused on the different subjects that make up the business course. Our Students said that they found the Taster Day helpful and that it gave them a better understanding on what it would be like to study business at college.Students said that they found the Taster Day helpful and that it gave them a better understanding on what it would be like to study business at college.

Adventure Island Business Trip

30 of our Year 10 ‘Business’ students visited Adventure Island along Southend Seafront. They were given the opportunity to design their own fairground, including designing a logo and price list for the various rides.

The students were able to learn more about a local business and how it operates. The students found the trip informative and fun, especially as they got to enjoy the rides in the afternoon!

Film Studies Workshop at The Forum, Southend

Some of our Film Studies students enjoyed a trip to The Forum in Southend to learn more about screenwriting and editing as part of their Film Studies course.

60 Minute-Mentor Programme

Our Year 8 students have been receiving mentoring from a local employer and a representative from Southend Borough Council in the 60 Minute Mentor Programme. Students learn all about the mentor’s industry sector and then have 1-1 sessions where they get the chance to discuss their career ideas, and learn more about the various options available to them post-16. The sessions are fun and interactive and there is a celebration at the end with some fantastic prizes on offer, including Amazon vouchers!

Post-16 Options Careers Fair

2022 saw our first Careers Fair since the pandemic. Students and parents/carers from Years 9-11 were invited in to meet with many Further Education providers including local colleges, sixth forms and training providers. There were also representatives from University Centre, South Essex and University of Essex who gave a talk on University Life.

The AIM group delivered a talk on Apprenticeships and there were many big employers including NHS, Metro Bank and McDonalds. The feedback from parents/carers and students was really positive, with many commenting on how useful they had found the evening.

Industry Talks: IPECO

Ipeco is a world leader in aircraft crew seating with a substantial position in executive passenger seating and galley inserts. Two employees came and spoke to our Year 10 and 11 students about the fantastic Career Builder Scheme and other opportunities available within their company.

Sport Taster Day at South Essex College, Thurrock Campus

Our Year 10 students got to ‘taste’ the various courses offered at South Essex College, and also got a chance to use the gym equipment! Students found the trip enjoyable and for many it was their first experience of going to a further education establishment.

The Scholar’s Programme: The Brilliant Club

Our Year 10 students took part in the Brilliant Club Programme this year. This involved working alongside a university and PhD tutor to produce a degree level essay, which is then marked and graded in the style of a degree.

At the end of the course students attend a graduation ceremony. This graduation would normally happen at a University campus however this year the event had to take place virtually. Students were recognised for their achievements and given certificates awarding them their grades.

Students said they were proud of what they had achieved and enjoyed the challenge of writing an essay on such a difficult subject. They also said that it gave them a better understanding of what it would be like to study at University.
